Background The Municipality of Yambol has made a great leap forward in tackling the problem of abandoned, abused, homeless and stray dogs by allocating premises for and funding a dog rescue and re-homing centre. Any opportunity to encourage and compliment the Municipality for their foresight should be taken up. Currently, due to financial constraints funding has been withdrawn from the shelter until the end of January. The Municipality has allocated premises for the shelter within part of an old, semi-abandoned industrial premises on the outskirts of Yambol. Because in the past, the site was used for generating power and processing chemicals, security is present on the site and public access is restricted to prearranged visits.

Facilities The kennels previously housed the security dogs used for patrols when the generating plant was active. Although in desperate need of expansion, maintenance and improvement, they are a secure temporary home for up to 80 dogs whilst they are inoculated, wormed, spayed or neutered and re-homing attempts made. The shelter wishes to improve the facilities by upgrading and expanding the kennels, introducing onsite medical facilities and a reception room. The main thrust of this appeal is to generate income to purchase materials in order to facilitate these improvements. Eventually the centre would like to increase their capacity and introduce much needed facilities for cats M and B Veterinary Clinic in Yambol, carry out medical procedures on behalf of the shelter and also supply food

This Appeal The shelter has indentified that their priority is to be in a position to have the building materials available to carry out the required improvements. Although the municipality can provide the workforce they are unable to supply the materials. They estimate that they will need to find around 1500 BGN in order to carry out the initial work. They cannot actually accept cash donations but money raised by this appeal will go directly to the purchase of building materials The shelter would also be very appreciative of donations of blankets/bedding, bowls. toys. Although food would be welcome it is not a priority as M and B will continue to supply it without payment until funding is restored Let us also not forget that good homes for dogs are needed in order to maintain throughput and prevent a situation where there is no space for new admissions

Staffing At this time there does not appear to be any permanent staffing - Ivan who has 30 years experience of working with dogs, has huge empathy with them and tries very hard to make the best of limited resources spends time at the project as does his wife Rodastina who has managerial input. They can be contacted directly for matters related to viewing and adopting dogs on 0878642192 Enquiries relating to fundraising should be directed to the coordinators (details at the bottom of the page)
